Forum: GratefulDead Subject: issue resolved -- Ricky "I-don't-play-fiddle" Skaggs - fiddler's PTSD?

Issue Resolved -- Can you please help me out with the names of this group, and the players who are performing with Ricky? Once I have the info, I'll go back to edit my item, and place their names there. Thanks for helping out me and The Archive.

This issue has been fun. Thank you everyone. In his notable post below, jglynn1.2 linked us to a great YouTube clip of Ricky playing Sally Goodin' on an old TV show. The pickups and the mics sound pretty good. I archived copies of these clips in my Boone Creek item. Then I embedded them into the notes section.

Ricky "I-don't-play-fiddle" Skaggs

What's the deal here? Is Ricky erasing his fiddle-playing history? Or am I smoking too much MMJ? For more context, we were just discussing Boone Creek, Ricky's impressive newgrass band in 1976.

I had this exact experience (not too much weed) over one year ago, when I started putting images and HTML codes into the content of my tapes on The Archive. I wanted to get a pic of Ricky with his fiddle. All the Ricky pics on the internet were mandolin shots or other stuff. No fiddle pics were available, period. I just looked again. I googled "Ricky Scaggs". I googled "Ricky Scaggs pics". I googled "Ricky Skaggs, facebook". That's plenty, to start with - not a single pic of Ricky with his fiddle.

I don't have his albums, nor have I looked up his Discography. But in my case, I've already known since 1974 that Ricky is a fiddle player. I've seen him perform and play fiddle many times 1974 - 1976. I taped him playing fiddle. For younger people checking out Ricky Skaggs on the internet - casually looking - I can't see how anyone would get an inkling of a notion that Ricky plays fiddle.

Hey Ricky, you're in denial! Why? Is this another case of fiddler's PTSD?

Ricky Skaggs is a damn-fine fiddler. His playing style would be mostly a Texas-style type - with influences from Kenny Baker and Byron Berline, also, some Vassar Clements sprinkled in there. That's how I would describe it.

Boone Creek performs Sally Goodin' - 8:02 long MP3, with banter
- Ricky Skaggs, fiddle
- Terry Baucom, banjo
- Jerry Douglas, dobro
- Vince Gill, electric mandolin
- Wesley Golding, guitar
- Tommy Hough, electric bass
- Steve Getzman, drums

Here are a couple from my personal collection.
These are from Merlefest '95 during Ricky's set with The Whites.
Actually it's the same photo - one is the full shot and the other is cropped.
Come to think of it, this may have been the only time I saw Scaggs play fiddle.

Ricky "I-don't-play-fiddle" Skaggs

That's a good pic. Thanks. I put an extra copy of your cropped pic in my Boone Creeek item on The Archive. You can't delete your uploaded files on The Archive. But, I can delete my copy of your photo. If you want the "photo credit" any time, this thread would be a good place to provide your info.

In the metadata editor on my Boone Creek item, I named your photo, "Ricky Skaggs - fiddle pic". Hopefully, this means your pic will come up on all the searches for Ricky's pics, in the future. Funny - who's laughing now Ricky? This thread will not live on in infamy. It will proudly exemplify your musical prowess, Ricky, and your renowned fiddle playing ability. You can run, and you can control most of the internet - just like BP is doing, but you can't hide from dogsinapile!'s Merlefest 1995 pic. Ricky was one of the finest fiddlers during the sizzling 1970s era.

Ricky Skaggs made it "big" first. Then Vince Gill made it "big" after that. Jerry Douglas is the best dobro player in the world today.

Here's one of him w/ Hornsby. It's not real clear, but it does prove that he at least knows how to hold a fiddle correctly.

I looked up the information for the players in this video. I've included the info on my Boone Creek tapes item. This is from the Austin City Limits TV show, featured on PBS, from 1981. It is Ricky Skaggs' band. I found another clip from this show. It's a cool tune named Raisin. Ricky plays Mandocaster on Raisin. The steel player's name is Terry Crisp. He plays dobro on Raisin. Both clips are up on my Item.

Ricky Skaggs - fiddle, mandocaster
Ray Flacke - guitar
Terry Crisp - pedal steel, dobro
Micki Merritt - piano
Bobby Hicks - rhythm guitar
Jessie Chambers - bass
Rodney Price - drums

Most of this info is sprinkled in the comments on YouTube. But the pedal steel player's name wasn't mentioned. I had to track him down. He's not that hard to find. His pic seems to match up with you're Sally Goodin' video of him. Here's his mug-shot.
